THE WIND had picked up outside, as if to remind the West Coast that winter really did exist. Pulling his coat collar up around his ears, Paul stood hunched against the elements. Between the warehouses he could just see the bay, or a glimmer of gray he suspected might be water.

Turning away from the view, he made his way back through the security gates and out onto the wide avenue serving the piers. The docks and the city bustled around him, everyone getting on with their lives. Paul let the color and life of the city blank his thoughts—blot them out like daubs of paint. The inside of his head became a work in abstract, something that only made sense when viewed from afar.

He wasn’t sure how far back one might have to stand to order his life, though.

Back at the Barrington facility, he found things to do. Resealed a crate to make sure it was airtight, reviewed his notes to make sure he’d caught every piece. He’d done all this before heading to the customs warehouse, but going through the motions helped keep him focused on nothing, or the semblance of nothing. He didn’t want to think.

When he’d checked everything twice, he glanced at his phone. No texts, no voice mails. There was an automated alert telling him he had a flight in three hours. Most people only needed two hours to get to the airport and on a plane. Paul always needed three. He tended to get distracted.

Staring at the alert, he again debated staying to complete his job against packing up to go to the airport. An hour later he’d paced the inside of the warehouse innumerable times and changed his mind just as many.

Evan would forgive him this. Right now it didn’t seem like he might, but he would. Paul felt sure of that, deep down. In his bones. Evan was patience personified. When he’d brought up the fact their sex life was seriously lacking, he hadn’t expected them to fix it right then, across the breakfast table. That was more Paul’s style.

But it was important. For Evan to even mention it meant it was important. Hell, it should be important. And if Paul did miss this date, it would change something between them. Not completing this catalog personally would be a mark against him, careerwise. But there would be other Arnold Barringtons and other collections.

There was only one Evan.

Paul stuffed his phone into his pocket, scooped up his laptop bag and small case, and ran for the exit. He had a plane to catch.
